3 Business Survival Tips for Thailand 4.0

At the conference, “Business in Thailand During the Second Half of 2017”, Associate Professor Pasu Decharin, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University, explained that the Thai business sector should become more competitive as new businesses open. Therefore, market research has become much more vital as companies work to come up with new innovations that will cater  to new market demands. Today, we see  businesses, including start-ups, large organisations and even multi-national companies moving towards online marketing. The growth of businesses in Thailand will depend on the next generations to pitch new ideas and invest in more start-ups. While these companies can focus on new ideas, they often do not have the capital to drive their business forward, whereas larger organisations have the capital to invest in these new businesses innovations in addition to their core business.

Apart from investing in start-ups, these organisations need to shift their growth direction to neighbouring countries due to the decrease in domestic demand. For the business sector to grow in accordance with the government’s Thailand 4.0 policy, management should focus on three main business survival points: Organisation 4.0, Leadership 4.0 and Strategy 4.0. The ideal organisation should be multi-cultural and multi-generation. Employees should be encouraged to obtain new skills regularly to keep up with the changing world. At the same time, executives should have intellectual humility to be open to suggestions and accept new ideas. Lastly, Strategy 4.0 is the ability to envision new ideas in order to create different management strategies alongside creating new innovations,” said Assoc. Prof. Pasu Decharin.

Mr. Wilert Puriwat, Head of the Marketing Department, Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, said that marketers should not only keep up with the latest trends, but also have vision and the ability to determine how consumers will  behave. Digital platforms should not only function as a marketing tool, but they can also evolve into business models. Modern day consumers should not only rely on social media, but they should try to learn through experience by building other forms of networks for sharing. When building a brand today,  market research, both online and offline, is vital to become a well-rounded businessthat can reach heir target with creative campaigns that will catch consumers’ attention.

Kamolchanok Pikulthipsakorn,  a fourth-year student from the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University,  recently won the “True Visions – BBC World News Future Journalist Award 2017 (FJA15)” for the Bangkok Metropolitan Region..

When asked, Kamolchanok said that this program gave her the opportunity to participate in activities outside the classroom that allowed her to develop her skills and follow her dreams. Although her primary goal is to become a news broadcaster and not a print journalist, this program provided fundamental experience of how to become a good reporter. Kamolchanok believes that in pursuing any career, you should know the core of the profession. If she were to become a journalist, she is ready to take on the job and deliver news in a truthful way to help develop Thai society.

The True Future Journalist Award 2017 offers 30 selected participants, including Kamolchanok, to intern at TNN24, a Thai satellite, cable and digital news channel owned by True Corporation. The one-month internship provides an opportunity to take part in news coverage, writing stories, translation, interviews and, most importantly, implement the knowledge acquired from the Faculty of Communication Arts into the workplace. Participants do not only practice theoretical and practical knowledge, but are also allowed to execute solutions for real-time problems.

Now, Kamolchanok would like to tell Chula students to follow their dreams and challenge themselves and grab every opportunity that comes their way. Although studying in classrooms is important, involving oneself in extracurricular activities to increase knowledge and gain experience is also vital.

“A big thanks to my professors at the Faculty of Communication Arts that pushed me to think outside the box and encouraging students to participate in activities. If I hadn’t known about this program, I would have missed an important opportunity to follow my dreams,”said Kamolchanok.

“Taking every opportunity that comes your way can really be way beyond your expectations,” said Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, or Aokbab,  a student in the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University who is also a famous  actress, best known for her role as “Lynn”, a straight-A student in the film “Chalard Games Gong”. or “Bad Genius”. For her beautiful portrayal of a mysterious character, Aokbab was presented the Screen International Rising Star Asia award at the 16th New York Asian Film Festival.

Aokbab explained how she didn’t expect to get this role as there were many other experienced and talented actors who came to audition. But because she’d read the screenplay and really got into the plot, she tried her best and was finally chosen to play the role of ‘Lynn’ as she desired.

Having two part-time jobs as a model and an actress while studying at the same time, especially acting in which Aokbab had no experience, she had to learn to manage her time and be responsible to balance her schedule. The experience and achievement she gained from working while studying are priceless. She expressed her appreciation  for everyone who helped her throughout this journey, saying how she wouldn’t have achieved what she did if it weren’t for them. “Although it can get tough sometimes, I am happy. It’s the first film I ever starred in, and I’ve gained not only invaluable experience, but also important life skills,” she said.

The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University currently offers fours programs, each requiring students to cooperate and work together regularly.  Aokbab shared her opinion about her faculty, saying how studying here has guided her toward a successful career path and prepared her professionally. She’s also gained a great deal frp, the educational style which allows her to think freely and be open-minded, imaginative and creative.

Aokbab sometimes finds herself thinking about her friends who also work and study and says she now better understands how tough this can be. She admires everyone with a dream who’s fighting to pursue it.

Aokbab has designed her life the way she wants, just as her name suggests. Aokbab means to design in Thai. How about you? How have you designed yours so far?
