Center for Thai as a Foreign Language (CTFL) is committed to encouraging and developing all aspects of Thai as a foreign language.

For over 30 years, the faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University has offered a wide selection of Thai language and culture courses for foreigners for various purposes such as academic improvement, business, and personal enrichment. In 2016, the Center for Thai as a Foreign Language also known as CTFL was formally founded.  The CTFL has been established to develop Thai language courses for foreigners and serve as a research and study platform for the teaching of Thai as a foreign language.  The center also aims to offer training programs for teachers in this field and produce teaching materials that suit the needs of the students.

The CTFL provides a variety of Thai language courses for foreigners.  Our two regular courses are the Intensive Thai program and the Communicative Thai for Beginners program.  In addition, we occasionally offer Thai for Mandarin Chinese Speakers Program, Survival Thai for Exchange Students, and private courses. Our long established Thai program focuses on the 4 main language skills  that is listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  We currently offer 9 levels of Thai language instruction, from beginning to advance levels.  Each level consists of 100 hours and a half months to complete.

From Intensive Thai 1 to intensive Thai 3 courses, students learn to communicate in daily conversation.  They also learn to read and write in basic Thai. More than 500 vocabulary items in various domains such as number, occupations, food, hobbies, sports, and travel are introduced, along with basic sentence structures and commonly used expressions.  Student at the intermediate levels, Intensive Thai 4 to Intensive Thai 6, learn to express their ideas and share their thoughts on more complicated topics both in speaking and in writing.  Discussion topics include history, biography of influential figures, beliefs, economy, and current news.  In addition, complex Thai grammatical issues are also elaborated upon.

The advanced levels, Intensive Thai 7, Intensive Thai8, and Intensive Thai9, make use of real life materials in class. Students continue to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through exposure with the Thai language in different contexts and genres.  Students are encouraged to participate in discussions of social and cultural issues, and practice report writing and classroom presentation in Thai.  In addition to learning the Thai language, students can engage in cultural exploration through participation in extracurricular activities and sightseeing trips offered by the CTFL.

For students with little or no background knowledge of the Thai language, the Communicative Thai for Beginners Program or CTB offers evening and weekend classes with an emphasis on improving listening and speaking skills. Phonetic alphabet in the form of Roman letters is used as an instructional tool.  The CTB has 3 levels. Each level consists of 40 hours of instruction and assessment. Upon completion, students will gain mastery of basic listening and speaking skills required in everyday communication as well as an understanding of Thai culture.  With our years of experience in providing Thai language courses for foreigners, I am certain that CTFL can provide students with an enriching and enjoyable learning environment.  If you are interested in learning Thai, please visit http://www.arts.chula.ac.th/CTFL/

Thailand Climbs Up to 32nd in Global Competitiveness Index Ranking 2017

Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University has revealed the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) ranking for Thailand, which has risen to 32nd rank this year.

The Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy of Chulalongkorn University, an official partner and member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Thailand has released the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) report, which compares the global competitiveness index of 137 countries. The top 10 nations this year are Switzerland, the United States, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Japan and Finland, respectively, while Thailand is ranked 32nd with a score of 4.7 out of 7.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pasu Decharin, Dean of Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University, one of World Economic Forum’s (WEF) partners, said, “The Faculty is responsible for collecting data for insights from executive teams of both large and small organizations of every industry, using questionnaire forms, based on WEF’s criteria for computing global index values.  There are 114 indicators to reflect the country’s overall performance and competitiveness, which are categorized into three main groups and 12 pillars in total”.

This year, Thailand’s rank has risen to 32, with a score of 4.7, an improvement compared to last year’s score of 4.6 and 34th ranking.  It is important to note that Thailand’s score and rank this year has climbed up because of specific pillars, such as the Infrastructure, which climbed from a score of 4.4 to 4.7 and ranking of 49 to 43.  This achievement is due to the quality improvement of infrastructure for roads, rails, ports,  air transport, and especially the number of mobile phone subscriptions, which has leaped from 55th to 5th this year.

Thailand has fared higher in several other areas this year, including in the Labor Market Efficiency, Institutions, Higher Education and Training, Macroeconomic Environment, Innovation (which is a crucial indicator of a country’s development), and Technological Readiness.

Several indices  put Thailand’s competitiveness in the top 30 when compared with 137 other nations.  One is the country’s Secondary Education Enrollment Rate, which is ranked 8th in the world, another major improvement as the Kingdom was ranked 84th last year.  For Government Budget Balance and Gross National Saving, Thailand is ranked 10 and 16, respectively.  Furthermore, Foreign and Domestic Market Size are ranked 12 and 24.  Finally, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is now ranked 20, which is considered high.

Additionally, Thailand has advanced in the financial market on the following pillars: Financing through Local Equity Market, Availability of Financial Services, Soundness of Banks, and Venture Capital Availability, being ranked 20th, 23rd, 27th and 27th, respectively.  These improvements suggest the readiness of the nation’s financial and marketing situations in the long-run.  For marketing, Thailand is ranked 21st and 25th on the Extent of Marketing and Degree of Customer Orientation, which indicated a progressed level of marketing concepts.  Furthermore, when compared with ASEAN+3 countries, Thailand is ranked 6th, after only Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and China, all of which remained in the same ranking positions as last year.  This clearly reflects Thailand’s stability in competitiveness among ASEAN+3 countries.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) and Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) are two of the most important measurements that the world keeps an eye on.  This is because both not only indicate the competitiveness of different countries all over the world, but also point out any important issues helpful for a nation’s sustainable development.  For Thailand, the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University is a part of the team that develops and distributes the aforementioned information.

The ranking of competitiveness in GCI is calculated from three main groups, each divided into 12 indices, called pillars.  The first group is Basic Requirements, which is the key for a country’s economic growth to move forward.  It is categorized into four pillars, namely Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic Environment, and Health and Primary Education.  The second group is Efficiency Enhancers, tools that will bring out a country’s efficacy, which is divided into six pillars, consisting of Higher Education and Training, Goods Market Efficiency, Labor Market Efficiency, Financial Market Development, Technological Readiness, and Market Size.  The final group is called Innovation and Sophistication, which focuses on accelerating the country’s innovation rate, including Business Sophistication and Innovation.

A species of giant potamid crab from the Potamon tannanti Rathbun group, Potamon bhumibol, is the largest species of freshwater crab ever collected from Thailand.  Discovered in 1967 by Professor Phaibul Naiyanetr, from the Department of Biology at Chulalongkorn University, these giant freshwater crabs were found inhabiting clean mountain streams and hidden under rocks, especially in Phu Luang, Loei Province.  Commonly known as the Giant Mountain crab, or Rock crab among locals, one special characteristic of the Potamon bhumibol is its tri-colored exoskeleton.  The shell, claws and four-paired legs are  dark brown, with purple shading inside the lower claws and orange claw tips.  In 2000, this giant freshwater crab was granted and named in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, marking the celebration of His Majesty’s 72nd birthday.

Professor Phaibul Naiyanetr stated that the discovery of the Potamon bhumibol species and being granted the permission to use His Majesty’s name are his greatest life achievements.  Moreover, the discovery illustrates how abundant and diversified Thailand’s ecosystem is.

Job Security and Human Skills in the Age of Automation

The rise of robotics and automation is becoming evident in Asia.  According to the International Federation of Robotics, by 2019, more than 1.4 million new industrial robots will be installed in factories around the world, with China being the strongest growing market for the robotics industry.

A recent study by International Labor Organization suggests that over 70% of salaried workers in 5 key sectors in ASEAN countries are at risk of being displaced by automation.  The study also points out the need to upgrade STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills among workers in general.  Cloud technology and big data analytics, Internet of Things, and digital marketing are also highlighted to have transformative impacts on jobs in ASEAN.

The roundtable discussion will focus on the above issues and the task universities have in preparing young students to cope with the future.  Given the scope of Thailand’s policies on the economy, education and development, the question then arises: what actions could be taken at the state, university and individual levels to make students ready to cope with the automation age.

Rethinking the Nature/Culture Divide

Notions, such as ‘nature’ or ‘culture’, are the product of a particular historical process and express the specific distribution of ontological properties to beings devised by the modern world.  Some civilizations have adopted other systems of distribution, resulting in ontologies and principles of association between humans and non-humans that differ widely from the one which emerged in Europe a few centuries ago.  The challenge for social sciences is to acknowledge this diversity, while retaining the ambition to explain it in non Eurocentric terms.

Lucrative marketing opportunity for Thai fermented fish

The making of pickled fish has expanded from the household to a commercial scale. Over 40,000 tonnes of pickled fish are produced each year, generating a whopping revenue of at least one billion baht, both for local distribution and export. With this in mind, the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, has conducted a research on the production of fermented fish to help reduce production cost and promote market expansion.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuenjit Prakitchaiwattana, from the Department of Food Technology, has discovered how to safely produce pickled fish within just three months. Pickled fish typically takes 6-24 months to produce and requires microorganisms and the fermentation under suitable conditions, that result in the distinctive and varying taste and texture of pickled fish in different regions. Dr. Chuenjit’s study results include new knowledge about the microorganisms involved in fermenting the fish, the genetic mechanism released during the fermentation, the type and amount of gas that produces odour and taste, and substances that can be biological indicators. The research has produced three types of fermented fish seeds, classifiable to the fermenting process used in different areas, and the discovery of a technology to produce seeds for commercial use.

Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuenjit Prakitchaiwattana has filed a patent to protect the technology for entrepreneurs using this technology in the future, as well as to control the production process.
